Tree branches that are rubbing on the roof or gutters or a window can cause costly damage to your home. Dead branches can break and fall on structures, vehicles or in your drive which can be costly to repair. Heavy snow in winter and high winds can break limbs that get caught up in the tree and need to be removed for safety. Trees that show signs of disease may need to be removed before they become hazardous and more difficult to remove safely.

Here are some things to look for:

  • Are there any limbs rubbing the roof, windows or gutters?
  • Are there dead branches that can promote fungus and decay and allow disease to take root?
  • Are there any branches that are broken or hanging down too low obscuring signs and making it difficult to get under the tree to mow the grass?
  • Are there limbs that are crossing and rubbing on each other?
  • Is there any unusual insect activity or evidence of insects such as holes in the wood?
  • Is the tree leaking a gooey, sticky, stinky liquid or sap-like substance?

Frothy Flux

Frothy or Alcoholic Flux is a disease caused by a microorganism that ferments the sap in trees. It is evidenced by a stinky, foamy liquid that leaks out of the trunk and old wounds on the tree. The sap has a strong odor, similar to rotting garbage. This is a sign of other problems with the tree, usually trees that are stressed or sick.
